Walk No. 10 A walk above the Danube

You arrive to Cluj Napoca airport. You will have a FREE guided tour in the city, depending on your flight hours. Transfer to Baile Herculane where you will spend the night.

The Iron Gates are the most beautiful section of the ancient Danube. After flowing across Germany, Austria and Hungary, the mighty river forms here the border between Serbia and Romania. In 1970 the Danube was dammed with the construction of the famous Iron Gare dam between Serbia and Romania, and water levels rose with 40 meters, so what you see now is a huge, long lake between the two rocky sides. We are now on the Serbian side, after a scenic drive and some stops to take pictures, we start our hike just above the Danube. We walk inland in an untouched and very beautiful beech forest on a gently rising path. The walk is very easy and in the heat of the summer the mighty beech trees provide for shade. After 2 short hours of hiking, you reach the top of the cliffs where you have a 360 truly amazing panorama. You see the mighty river literally under your feet, great vessels sailing on it up and down. Ont he opposite side the view includes the rolling hills of souther Romania as far as the Retezat mountains and the snow capped Southern Carpathians. In front of you the huge head of Decebal seems more like a tiny chess-piece. You can walk ont he rim for a while and take pictures, rest and just enjoy one of the greatest views of the Danube. We descend on the same path. After this hike we usually arrange for a boat trip on the Danube, visiting the two millenia old Tabula Traiana, the head of Decebal, the Mraconia monastery perched on a rock just above the water, the cave of Veterani. You will pass through both the Small and Big Cazane Gorges, and you can admire the huge rock faces from the boat. (Very easy walk, Duration 4 hours, distance: 4 km. Altitude up: 300m, down: 300m.)
