Walk No. 16 The ridge of Mehadiei Mountains
You arrive to Cluj Napoca airport. You will have a FREE guided tour in the city, depending on your flight hours. Transfer to Baile Herculane where you will spend the night.
If you want some challenge, this is an ideal hike for you. Few people choose to walk this path and this is a path for the few chosen. At the beginning you follow Walk no. 15. After having crossed Tasna Gorges, you turn tot he left and after a tenuous 2 hour’s walk on a gradually and constatntly rising path, you will reach the main ridge of Mehadiei mountains. This is a wild place, the path is sometimes not very evident. Long trousers are recommended because of the dense vegetation. Then you come out of the forest and from a rocky outcrop called the White Cliffs, you have unparalleled scenic view of the whole region and the Cerna Valley. From here on, you will walk only downwards. First we descend to a flat crater, this is actually a huge sinkhole, characteristic to this carstic mountain range. We are here at around 1000 m above sea level, and there is a whole row of such sinkholes up here, resembling huge flat plates. We cross a small hill to another one, and we still have some 2-3 to go. Then we begin a steep descent towards the Valley of Cerna. The last section of the walk is a – sometimes – steep descent through open areas, meadows, dense beech forests. Stunning views all over the place. (Difficult walk, trekking poles recommended. Length: 14 km. Duration: 8 hours. Altitude: 1400 m up, 1300 m down. This hike is actually an extension of walk no. 15.)
